Skype is a program that allows people to talk on the phone while they are online and to also instant message at the same time. It was released in August 2003. It is now used all over the world so people can communicate in a cheap and affordable way. There are many reasons why Skype became popular so fast.

Despite its affordable and most of the time free calling plan, one of the main reasons why Skype took off was because of the really awesome emoticons and smiles that you can use while talking with your friends. There are lots of emoticons that people use for various reasons. People even use these faces while they are in meetings to help keep things light and easy going. It's amazing how one emoticon can change the scene and make people laugh.
